In a part of the world known for cream teas and pasties this country pile offers something different, with exquisitely crafted dishes of quail’s eggs, lobster, venison and the like. Even without Michael Caine’s two Michelin-starred restaurant the stunning grounds and grand Dowton Abbey-esque interiors would be a big draw, but throw in delicacies such as a hot prune and Armagnac soufflé and it’s unlikely you’ll ever want to leave.

The Castle Terrace, Edinburgh

Combine the best of seasonal Scottish produce with chef-patron Dominic Jack’s classical French training and you’ve got a winning combination. On a typical visit you might get Orkney scallops, Shetland salmon and Ayrshire Pork, all crafted into dishes that look (almost) too good to eat. A well-deserved Michelin star was awarded within a year of the restaurant opening.
